Sign up to participate in the first ever Lake Hernando Dragon Boat Festival! This November dragon boat teams are descending on Lake Hernando in Citrus County, Florida to participate in the maiden voyage of the Lake Hernando Dragon Boat Festival. This ancient Chinese sport draws participation from all walks of life and those who partake in the festival represent both seasoned Dragon Boat Club member and amateurs alike. Similar festivals have previously been held throughout other parts of Florida. The Hernando event promises fun and excitement on November the 16th, 2013 and again on March 15th, 2014.
Dragon Boat races have existed for over 2,000 years. The sport originated in China around 220 B.C. Currently, over 2,000,000 athletes participate in Dragon Boat events globally. Dragon boats are elegant and graceful; colored brightly with the figure of a dragon on the front. Each team includes twenty paddlers and one drummer all moving in time to a drum beat.
Teams at Hernando Lake Dragon Boat Festival will include teams from local businesses, churches, and civic organizations as several Dragon Boat Clubs who are sponsoring the event. These include the Grandmasters Dragon Boat Club of The Villages and the Nature Coast Dragon Boat Club of Homosassa. Spectators can enjoy the festival for free and there will be beer wine and food available to purchase. Most of the proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior Project.
